Assignment on John Garang

1. Who is John Garang?
John Garang is the fonder of the SPLM and the SPLA. John Garang died about 2 years ago and to be 3 in July of this year. He didn't view the problems in Sudan the way others did. He had a different way of looking at and understanding those problems and believed he had a way to solve those problems. His religion was a Christian and he was from the Southern part of Sudan, and the Dinka tribe.
2. Who are the Dinka people of Sudan? The Dinka are the people in Sudan who live in the Southern part of Sudan. They all were split into groups and later split into sub groups. The Dinka have cattle in which they get food from and butter is made from it. The cattle's urine they use to die their hair. The Dinka people use body art to brush their teeth and also to keep away blood sucking ticks. The cattle they have however, are not killed for meat. But if one of them dies or is sacrificed then they do eat the meat from the cattle. The skin of it they use for belts, drum skins, mats, and I'm sure many other things.
3. What is the SPLM/SPLA?
In Sudan and also known all over the world the letters SPLM stands for Sudan's People Liberation Movement. The letters SPLA stands for Sudan's People Liberation Army. As stated in the answering of my other question John Garang was the founder of both the Liberation Movement and the Liberation Army. The Sudan's People Liberation Army was formed in the year 1983, along with the Sudan's People Liberation Movement.
4. Describe the incidents, events, and the developments of the genocide in Sudan?
The incidents that happened in the genocide was that the SPLA was accused of human rights abuse. With in the 46 years of war the Southern part of Sudan has lost 2 million people- which is about most of their population. For the people in Sudan school, health, and transportation is almost non existent to them. This has caused 2 generations of of children with no education and completly illerterate. Also in Sudan there are people who have no choice but to become a slave. I believe that the effects the war had on the people of Sudan is really kind of unreal. This to me is unbelievable, that they can actually get away with these things now that, we are not even in those times when slavery was allowed.
5. Pan-Afrikanism is the unity of different Afrikan people and different Afrikan nations. How would this type of unity benefit Sudan?
I believe that this could help the people of Sudan because, maybe it can help them to have some type of unity among themselves. This would actually be pretty great for them because, it can help the people of Sudan to accept each other for who they are. For eaxample, from my research the reason another genocide has com about is simply because, of the religion that some of the people in South Sudan have or believe in. So this would be a terrific idea for the people of South and North Sudan.

Five Million Dead in Counting- Assignment

1. What events led to the outbreak of war in the DR Congo?
The truth is that the war never really stopped. So I would say that the reason that the war is going in the Congo is because, of the former President that died. The people in the Congo I believe just really need to learn how to let certain things go because, what they are actually fighting about has happened about 14 years ago. Also because, one day things are going to go to far and are realy going to get out of hand.

2. How many have died in this war?
There is over 5 million people who have died in this war. Some of which who have died because, they were afriaid that they would get killed by the soldiers. There are some who have died because, they did get kiilled. Also you have some who have died because, of starvation, and lack of health care because of the fighting.
Over what time frame have the deaths taken place?
The time frame the deaths have taken place was with in 10 years. The Tutsis- led the Rwandan Patriotic Army to invade the Kivus, the part of the Congo that borders Rwanda, in 1996 and again in 1998.
What countries and ethnic groups are invovled?
As far as the war part the situtation the Tutsis and the Hudus are involed. The contries involved is Rwanda, and DR Congo. The Countries that oversee this and are trying to solve the problem (the U.N or peacekeepers) are the United States, European Union, and African Union.

3.What do you think can happen to stop the war/genocide in Congo?
To be honest I really do not know what can happen to stop this genocide. The reason I say this is because, almost everything has been done already to stop this genocide/war. The biggest peacekeepers of the world have even tried to stop the war, and it is like nothing can help them. They even tried to get them to sign some papers to stop the war and arm down, which they did. However, what they signed off to was like it really didn't matter, because directly after both sides of the war signed off they went back to what they were doing, which was to try thier hardest to kill the other group of people and the rest of the people that are not even fighting. So to me I think what needs to happen to stop the genocide/war is that they should put aside their differences and forget about it, because what they are fighting for in my opinion is not that serious.

Rawanda Assignment

1. What factors led to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994?
The factors that led to the genocide in Rwanda was the death of the former president of Rwanda, President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu. His death was caused by the plane he was on was shot down on April 6,1994. This has been blamed on the current president of Rwanda, who's name is Paul Kagame.
2. What was the time frame of the 1994 genocide and how many people died?
The time frame of the genocide in Rwanda, was during the months of April 1994- July 1994. The number of people that died was unbelievable. Most of the people that were killed, were of the group called the Tutis. The actual number overall that died in this genocide was 800,000.
3. What were some of the after effects of the genocide?
Some of the after effects of the genocide is that the Tutsi are now ruler of Rwanda . Also that even though the Tutsis are rulers or they are the government over Rwanda, they still have conflict with the Hutus. Lastly, I want to say that the people who have don e research on Rwanda find that it is impossible for any group of people to solve the issues going on between the Tutsis and the Hutus.
